Orthopedic Injuries

What are orthopedic injuries?

It is common for servicemembers to experience injuries to the legs, arms, feet, shoulders, hips, knees, and other joints. These injuries may ultimately cause secondary conditions, which may include additional injuries in other areas of the body and chronic injuries, like arthritis.

What is required to obtain service-connection for an orthopedic injury?

To qualify for benefits, you must establish: (1) an in-service event or injury, (2) a current diagnosis of an orthopedic injury or condition, and (3) a nexus between the in-service event and your diagnosis. You may also qualify for benefits if you can show that your service exacerbated an existing condition.
